Okay, so I am working at the polls on Tuesday so I had to vote early. I figured that if I showed up a few minutes before the early voting poll location opened I wouldn’t have to wait too long. I was wrong. The line was already out the building with at least an hour wait. While I enjoyed talking to the people around me, I really was wishing for something to do.
After spending over an hour in line I had a lot of time to think about activities that would have made the wait go faster. I saw a few people who had brought something to keep them occupied and many people looking tired and bored. Here are some things that might make waiting in line to vote a more productive and enjoyable time.
A Book – There were several people reading. Some had actually paper books and others were reading on their smart phone or tablet. The wandered through the line without even looking up.
Voter Information Pamphlet – This seemed very popular as people reviewed candidates and issues on the ballot. This, however, did not seem to last more that 30 minutes before people seemed to lose interest.
Electronic Games – I had these on my phone, but I often got distracted.
Needle Work – I was really wishing for my crocheting, especially when I saw a lady knitting a wash cloth. Small projects are light, portable and easy to do while standing or walking.
Smart Phone – Standing in long lines can be a good time to make phone calls to family or friends that you have been meaning to call. Having a smart phone also allows you to text your friends that are farther back in the line and give them updates on how things are moving and how long the wait is once the actually reach the door.
Food & Water – This is definitely recommended if you are trying to vote during your lunch hour or the line is really long. By the time I got to the voting booth I was extremely thirsty and had been wishing for a drink for at least 20 minutes.
Not Children – This demographic does not do well in long lines. Parents seemed frustrated as they dealt with tired, hungry and bored children. If you must bring your child(ren) I would recommend an activity bag and snacks. Maybe even a portable DVD player and headphones.
Long Lines are Expected at the Polls
Only about 1/5th of voters voted early so long lines are expected. Since there was already an hour wait in line before the poll opened please come prepared. This being a hotly debated and close election you might consider camping out at the polling location the night before. LOL
Have a great weekend!
Can I just say what a comfort to discover somebody that genuinely knows what they’re talking about on the web.
You definitely understand how to bring a problem to light and
make it important. A lot more people must look at this and understand this side of
your story. I can’t believe you aren’t more popular since you certainly possess the gift.
